Assoc Director,Marketing Technology, Data and Software Engineering
Cambridge, MA, US, 02142
Overview
Alnylam Pharmaceuticals is building a data-driven digital marketing capability that integrates technology and commercial operations to deliver personalized experiences for healthcare professionals and patients across our rare disease portfolio. The Associate Director, Marketing Technology, Data and Software Engineering serves as the primary technical interface between the Data, AI & Enterprise Architecture organization and the Commercial/Marketing business function, owning the engineering backbone that powers Alnylam’s digital marketing execution: data pipelines, platform integrations, CDP activation, and analytics infrastructure connecting the Alnylam Data Platform (Snowflake lakehouse) to the marketing technology ecosystem.
Reporting to the Head of AI, Data & Engineering, this role partners daily with the Chief Marketing Officer’s organization to translate marketing data and technology requirements into production-grade engineering solutions. The position manages a team of data engineers, software engineers, and MarTech integration specialists, and serves as the engineering co-lead across Alnylam’s five-team commercial digital marketing structure. This is a hybrid role based in Cambridge, MA, with 3 days per week onsite.
Responsibilities
· Own the end-to-end marketing data pipeline architecture, ingesting data from all marketing platforms (Veeva, Adobe Experience Cloud, Salesforce, Google Ads, paid media) into the Snowflake data lakehouse using the Alnylam Common Integration Pattern (Snowflake Data Sharing, Fivetran, Snowpipe)
· Design and maintain the composable CDP architecture with Snowflake as the system of record and Salesforce Data Cloud as the activation layer, ensuring identity resolution, consent propagation, and event schemas are standardized across all marketing touchpoints
· Architect and maintain the “data spine”: the standardized integration layer connecting all marketing execution tools to the Snowflake/dbt core, eliminating ad hoc point-to-point integrations that create technical debt
· Lead the technical implementation of real-time journey orchestration infrastructure, including audience suppression logic, frequency caps, channel sequencing, and agentic decisioning capabilities using AWS Bedrock
· Serve as the primary technical interface to Commercial/Marketing business stakeholders, partnering with Business co-lead Directors across the five commercial digital marketing teams (Audience Science, Digital Experience, Content Intelligence, Omnichannel Delivery, Performance Analytics)
· Lead the engineering implementation of AI-powered marketing capabilities, including Next-Best-Experience engine infrastructure, audience propensity modeling pipelines, content personalization at scale, and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) monitoring across AI search platforms
· Manage and develop a team of data engineers, software engineers, MarTech integration engineers, and BI engineers while contributing hands-on to production code, architecture decisions, and technical design reviews
Qualifications
Required
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field; Master’s degree preferred
· 10+ years of progressive experience in data engineering, software engineering, or platform engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing technical teams
· 3+ years of experience building data pipelines and platform integrations for marketing, commercial analytics, or digital experience teams; pharmaceutical or life sciences industry experience strongly preferred
· Deep hands-on expertise with the modern data stack: Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, and cloud-native orchestration tools (Astronomer/Airflow)
· Production experience with CDP architectures, including Salesforce Data Cloud, Adobe Experience Platform, or equivalent composable CDP implementations
· Strong software engineering fundamentals: Python, SQL, REST/GraphQL APIs, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code practices
· Experience with AWS services (Bedrock, SageMaker, S3, Lambda) in a production environment
· Demonstrated ability to serve as a trusted technical partner to non-technical business stakeholders, particularly in marketing and commercial functions
· Understanding of pharmaceutical regulatory requirements including GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, and MLR review processes as they apply to marketing data and technology
Preferred
· Experience with identity resolution, consent management, and privacy-by-design architectures in a regulated industry
· Familiarity with the Veeva ecosystem (Vault PromoMats, CRM) and its data integration patterns
· Background in real-time personalization engineering, including A/B testing infrastructure (Adobe Target) and journey orchestration platforms
· Experience with multi-touch attribution modeling and marketing mix analytics data products
· AWS Solutions Architect or equivalent cloud certification
· Prior experience in rare disease, specialty pharma, or biotech commercial operations
· Track record of recruiting and developing engineering talent from non-pharma industries (financial services, technology, consumer digital)
· Travel: Minimal; occasional travel to vendor conferences (Google, AWS) and team offsite
