Overview

The Research Department at Alnylam is seeking a passionate and creative translational scientist or physician-scientist to join the Translational Genetics and Medicine Group and play a leading role in utilizing human data and clinical insights to enhance the discovery, validation, and prioritization of new therapeutic targets. Our team aims to enhance the translation of basic scientific discoveries in 1) human genetics by improving phenotyping and interpretation of genome-wide association results, and 2) biology by using human data for biomarker discovery, assessing unmet need, and guiding our preclinical strategy. We aim to discover and de-risk novel therapeutic targets and indications for future development. The successful candidate will be part of a team that works collaboratively with Alnylam Human Genetics, Next Wave preclinical scientists, and early-stage clinical development with a focus on providing rigorous statistical and epidemiological analyses. We are open to onsite or hybrid working in Cambridge, MA (USA).

Key Attributes and Responsibilities

  • Integrate knowledge of medicine, disease areas, and insights from human data (genetics, epidemiology, clinical trials) to generate and vet novel therapeutic hypotheses.
  • Interface with key stakeholders across preclinical and clinical development in early programs from lead target identification to Phase 2 clinical trials serving as a representative for translational research, presenting to leadership and contributing to workflows on aspects of trial design and biomarker discovery and development.
  • Guide preclinical and translational strategy using medical knowledge integrated with data from biobanks, electronic health records, natural history studies, and clinical trials. Experience with large genetic and natural history databases such as UK Biobank, Alliance for Genomic Discovery, Truveta, or similar is a plus.
  • Read the literature, derive own insights, and identify novel biological pathways and therapeutic indications for prioritization.
  • Gain increasing independence and responsibility. Will be expected to manage workload including balancing long-term projects with time-sensitive requests.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills, ability to draft high quality scientific manuscripts and presentations for internal/external use.

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of putting basic sciences questions in a translational/clinical context.
  • MD or MD/PhD in with a strong foundation in internal medicine, pediatrics, medical genetics, or a subspeciality with sufficient exposure to a breadth of rare and common diseases.
  • Non-MD applicants with substantial translational experience (8+ years in industry) in neuromuscular, cardiac, metabolic, or neuropsychiatric areas will be considered.
  • Basic knowledge of clinical trial design and ability to interpret and synthesize the clinical trial landscape across multiple domains are preferred.
  • Familiarity with python and/or R and basic principles of data science and experience with clinical informatics, genomics and/or epidemiological analyses are a plus.
