Overview

The Director of IT Infrastructure and Network Operations is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing the organization's IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, disaster recovery, and asset management. This role provides strategic direction, operational oversight and in-depth technical expertise to the IT infrastructure and network support teams. This role actively collaborates with Alnylam’s leadership and their teams. The position is based in Cambridge, Mass and offers a hybrid work schedule with required off-hour and weekend availability for emergency response.

This position is hybrid and will be primarily located in Cambridge, MA.

Key Responsibilities

IT Infrastructure Management:

  • Lead the planning, design, implementation, and maintenance of the organization's IT infrastructure, including network systems, servers, storage, virtual and cloud platform.
  • Ensure the stability, scalability, security, and performance of the IT infrastructure to meet business needs and industry standards. Ensure existing policies and procedures are adequate and being followed by team members and establish new ones as needed.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement innovative technology solutions that enhance operational efficiency and support business objectives.
  • Oversee the management of infrastructure and network operations to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
  • Oversees the development of IT conceptual architecture, both internal and cloud, and next-generation IT systems for all the technical activities required by the organization such as collaboration services, data management, scientific analysis, and global expansion
  • Establishes enterprise architecture aligning business capabilities with technical capabilities into a clear and comprehensive vision with implementation strategies and delivery roadmaps
  • Provides expertise and oversight of complex IT operations, as well as professional and technical staff serving Alnylam offices globally
  • Brings new ideas forward to augment and improve the business strategy, accelerate services, or protect data
  • Utilize complex thinking and strategizing to ascertain which legacy systems require updating, which hardware or software must be replaced, and which services or products are necessary to support the entire organization's operations.

Cybersecurity and Disaster Recovery:

  • Work with InfoSec team and implement cybersecurity strategies, policies, and procedures to protect the organization's digital assets, systems, and data.
  • Ensure compliance with existing policies and procedures, industry. standards and regulations related to life sciences and information security.
  • Collaborate with the CISO office and relevant stakeholders to enhance the organization's cybersecurity posture.
  • Develop, maintain and test a robust disaster recovery plan to minimize downtime and ensure business continuity in the event of disruptions or disasters.

CMDB/Asset Management:

  • Develop and implement CMDB/asset management strategies and policies to effectively track, maintain, and optimize the organization's technology assets.
  • Establish processes for procurement, deployment, retirement, and disposal of IT assets in compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure accurate inventory records, license compliance, and cost optimization.
  • Oversee vendor relationships and contracts related to IT infrastructure and asset management.

MSP/Vendor Management:

  • Evaluate, select, and manage relationships with IT vendors and service providers.
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements to ensure cost-effective and efficient services

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred, will consider additional years of experience in lieu of degree.  
  • A minimum of 10 years of management related experience is required in Life science or healthcare environment.
  • Proven experience in managing IT infrastructure, network operations, and asset management, preferably in a leadership role.
  • Strong technical expertise in areas such as network architecture, server administration, cybersecurity, and cloud computing.
  • Experience overseeing a shared services provider for networking, computer, or other infrastructure area.
  • Understands complex, highly regulated and global environments supporting scientific development, manufacturing and commercialization.
  • Strong understanding of GxP validation and specifically change management.
  • Demonstrates creativity, clear thinking, and excellent communication skills.
  • Motivates others to solve challenging technology problems, using a combination of engineering and IT expertise, innovation and leadership  .
  • Demonstrates ability to quickly grasp new concepts and integrate them into projects as appropriate and to rapidly and effectively determine the required action in a new situation.
  • Demonstrates ability to spearhead and oversee complex projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing IT strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with the ability to build and motivate high-performing teams.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills are required.
  • Relevant certifications such as MCP, MCSE, ITIL, CISSP or PMP certifications are a plus.

  • Microsoft Entra and on-prem Active Directory in hybrid configuration, Servers, Group Policies
  • Pure Storage
  • Nutanix and Hyperflex, including VMWare and Nutanix hypervisor
  • Office 365 in Hybrid configuration including Microsoft Exchange online
  • Druva, Veeam, Veritas or other automated backup systems on prem and cloud
  • SQL server maintenance
  • Deploying patches, OS and other software via PXE, SCCM or other automation systems
  • Desktops, Servers, and other infrastructure
  • Cisco and Meraki firewalls including policies
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Amazon Web Services
  • LogicMonitor
  • AIOps
