Overview
For the Executive Director, Head of BD Transactions, we are seeking an experienced business development (BD) leader with strong business acumen with deep business development experience in the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industry.
The ideal candidate will process deep understanding of the deal making process in the industry, strong business acumen, and extensive experience with financial valuation and investment structure. Success in this role will be defined by the ability to provide transaction leadership in conducting business / commercial / financial analyses and structuring / negotiating complex deals across a diverse portfolio of transactions for all stages of technologies and therapeutical assets. The candidate is required to have strong interpersonal skills as this role will work with multiple senior internal and external stakeholders to drive and facilitate highly visible and time-sensitive BD projects.
Reporting to SVP & Head of Business Development, this position is hybrid and will be located in Cambridge, MA.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate leadership and business acumen while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including R&D, Commercial, Finance, Legal, and Search & Evaluation to evaluate external innovation including leading development of business cases and term sheets, cross-functional due diligence, and contract negotiations to execute strategic transactions in support of BD opportunity review, prioritization, and decision-making.
- Develop and recommend proposed deal structure and terms, utilizing an in-depth knowledge industry deal-making trends and co-lead, with the senior S&E / R&D / Commercial / Legal / Finance Leads, the delivery of business assessments and recommendations of external opportunities, including deal proposals, valuation, deal status, and key issues of the transaction to Alnylam governance bodies for endorsement.
- Lead or coach team members to negotiate deals, find solutions to bridge gap(s) when needed, communicate key deal issues, risks, and updates to leadership and senior internal stakeholders, review and provide comments to term sheets and contracts drafted by the Legal team to make sure they reflect business intent.
- Serve as thought partner to facilitate and support formulation of BD strategies to drive toward enterprise goals and objectives while sourcing and evaluating external innovation.
- Communicate effectively both internally across a matrix organization and externally with potential partners by articulating the vision, purpose, and expectations of the BD initiatives to ensure clarity and alignment.
- As part of the BD Leadership Team, manage or coach a team of BD professionals and foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration.
Qualifications
- MBA, JD, or other advanced business degrees with a background in science preferred. Must have an aptitude to quickly understand new science and technology.
- At least 10+ years of relevant industry experience in biotechnology and pharmaceutical BD, in particular, transactions function with a significant number of closed deals, including experience in leading multiple complex and high-value transactions. Deal sheet specifics required.
- Deep understanding of the drug development processes and extensive knowledge of biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries including market trends, regulatory environment, the macro deal making environment, and their business impact.
- Proven ability to integrate scientific knowledge into business case to analyze and understand commercial forecasts, P&Ls, risk analyses, and other financial valuations techniques and strong term sheet / contract negotiation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to simplify complex ideas / concepts, synthesize and summarize a complex set of facts and opportunities within the broader strategic context as well as proven track record to exert influence, facilitate candid dialogue find solutions and gain alignment.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills, with the proven ability to influence and persuade internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
- Highly collaborative, team-oriented, and adaptable, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects efficiently with a high degree of independence and purposed urgency.
- Strong executive presence, leadership, and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
U.S. Pay Range
$280,500.00 - $379,500.00
The pay range reflects the full-time base salary range we expect to pay for this role at the time of posting. Base pay will be determined based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, skills, and education. This role is eligible for an annual short-term incentive award (e.g., bonus or sales incentive) and an annual long-term incentive award (e.g., equity).
