Overview

The Senior Manager, IT Project Management is responsible for leading the hands-on delivery management of strategic IT projects, in addition to supporting the optimizing of IT Project Management Office (PMO) operations. This role ensures consistent governance, project management and operational excellence across the IT organization, aligning IT initiatives with business objectives. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of strategic leadership, process improvement, and execution capabilities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

This position is hybrid and will be primarily located in Cambridge, MA.

Key Responsibilities

Hands-on Project Delivery (70%)

  • Lead IT projects, managing the full project lifecycle from initiation to deployment.
  • Develop detailed project plans, schedules, budgets, and risk management strategies to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
  • Support change management strategies, ensuring smooth user adoption, training, and communication plans.
  • Manage project stakeholders, including IT, business units, and external vendors, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Identify, escalate, and mitigate project risks and issues, facilitating solutions with business and IT leadership.
  • Conduct Lessons Learned/Retrospective sessions and contribute to process improvements for future projects.

PMO Operations & Governance (30%)

  • Support evolution of IT project governance frameworks, methodologies, and best practices to ensure project success and alignment with business objectives.
  • Align and evolve project planning, execution, and reporting processes, ensuring compliance with corporate IT and PMO standards.
  • Lead IT portfolio and sub portfolio domain management as assigned, providing visibility into project prioritization, resource allocation, and risk assessment.
  • Work closely with Finance, IT, and Business Leaders to establish budgeting, financial oversight, and resource planning to support the IT Project Portfolio.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the IT PMO to enhance efficiency, transparency, and reporting capabilities.
  • Support and facilitate PMO and Leadership Meetings, prepare dashboards, reports, and key performance metrics.
  • Partner with IT and regional business teams to ensure alignment of IT sub-portfolios domains
  • Establish post-implementation support processes, ensuring appropriate system ownership and knowledge transfer.
  • Expected to manage the IT CapEx operations, working closely with the PC controls team and F&E.  Attend monthly forecast meetings, support the preparation and submission of the LRP budgets. Manage the CapEx budget ensuring all projects are tracked, track invoicing and work with accounting on in service dates and asset disposal.
  • Manage Smartsheet system administration and engagement. Responsible for the Smartsheet contract and serves as point of contact for Alnylam for user inquiries.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in IT Project and Portfolio Management, with a strong background in PMO operations, governance, and project execution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Management, or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • PM certifications such as PMP or Agile (Scrum Master) are preferred.
  • Experience managing global, multi-functional IT projects in biotech, pharma, or life sciences is highly desirable.
  • Strong expertise in IT governance frameworks, project methodologies (Waterfall, Agile, Hybrid), and portfolio management tools.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to drive consensus and collaboration.
  • Hands-on experience managing IT projects involving system implementations, business process transformations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to adapt quickly, problem-solve, and thrive in a fast-paced, evolving IT environment.
  • Proficiency in project management tools such as Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, Jira, or PPM platforms
