Overview
The Medical Science Liaison is a senior field-based scientific and clinical expert responsible for leading and executing field medical activities that support the Medical Affairs strategies for marketed products and/or development compounds. The Associate Director, Medical Science Liaison leverages deep clinical knowledge and field expertise along with business acumen and strategic vision to identify and communicate scientific trends and inform medical strategy in the healthcare environment. They engage in peer mentoring across the Field team and are sought out by peers and colleagues to inform the medical strategy with identified market and healthcare trends.
The Associate Director, Medical Science Liaison will deeply understand the external healthcare environment and data gaps related to the disease area or product; gather field intelligence, identify and communicate key insights to internal colleagues; and fulfill stakeholder information needs by communicating appropriate details of therapeutic area and product/compound.
The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of rare and prevalent diseases development and a strong track record of scientific strategy, cross-functional collaboration and business acumen, with a passion for advancing patient care and scientific communication.
Key Responsibilities
KOL Management & Field Insights
- Lead the identification and engagement of medical experts and key opinion leaders (KOLs) in relevant therapeutic areas in their region, building and maintaining robust peer-to-peer relationships to support Alnylam’s scientific objectives, build awareness and ensure proper product use, and report insights and emerging clinical trends.
- Gather, analyze, and communicate high-level field intelligence and actionable insights to inform internal strategy and decision-making.
- Represent the field medical perspective in cross-functional teams, contributing to the development of strategic and tactical plans and materials
Scientific Exchange & Education
- Deliver advanced, fair-balanced scientific and medical education to healthcare professionals (HCPs), both proactively and in response to requests, ensuring compliance with national laws, regulations, and industry codes.
- Lead regional group meetings and organize regional symposia and events
- Assist the headquarters medical affairs team in the development of national advisory boards, national symposia and publication plans
- Support the review of promotional and educational materials in collaboration with Medical Affairs and Commercial teams.
- Lead scientific support at conferences, congresses, and key meetings, representing Alnylam as a senior medical expert.
- Report adverse events in due time according to company policy
Research & Evidence Generation
- Identify and facilitate investigator-initiated study (IIS) opportunities, acting as the primary conduit between investigators and Alnylam.
- Support clinical trial activities, including patient recruitment and site engagement, in alignment with global and local strategies.
Team Development & Mentorship
- Mentor and coach MSL colleagues, fostering a culture of scientific excellence, best practice sharing, and continuous professional development.
- Act as a subject matter expert on all aspects of the MSL role, driving process improvements and innovation within the team.
- Maintain a high level of expertise in the evolving scientific / therapeutic area and in competitor medicines
Compliance & Ethics
- Ensure full compliance with Alnylam’s Ethics, Compliance, and internal policies, as well as all applicable external regulations.
- Report adverse events and product complaints in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with Key Account Managers, Commercial colleagues, and office-based Medical Affairs teams to ensure strategies are patient-focused and medically appropriate.
- Serve as a liaison to professional organizations, disease state advocacy groups, and patient support foundations.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in medical/natural sciences (MD, PharmD, PhD, or equivalent) required.
- A proven track record as an MSL or in a similar medical affairs role within the healthcare industry is a required
- Experience in Rare Disease or Cardiology preferred
- Demonstrated strategic leadership and ability to influence at multiple organizational levels.
- Proven expertise in scientific exchange and KOL management
- Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize complex scientific and market data.
- Experience working in a highly matrixed, cross-functional environment.
- High ethical standards and commitment to compliance.
- Fluent in English and German.
- Trained in the reporting of adverse events
- Experience with literature review, synthesis and analysis
- Experience in public presentation required
- Time and territory management skills required
- Ability to organize and prioritize own work schedule
- Prior experience in managing a frequent travel schedule
- Willingness to travel extensively (50 –60%), including overnight travel as required.
